Hello all,

I am new to IOSH & new to forum, looking for some confirmation on this issue.

We are a Large Manuafacturing Company based in Hoddesdon.

Our Occupational Health provider carry out audio tests (as a matter of course) for all employees at pre employment medical stage. Thereafter employees are subjected to health surveillance where the specific risk assessment indicates that they are exposed to hazardous noise as defined under the Noise Regs.

With regards to the other employees i.e. low risk office workers who are not exposed to Noise, am I correct in thinking there is no requirement to repeat the audio tests and just perhaps at our own discretion i.e. part of a wellness check etc?

Thanks in advance,
John

Quote from HSE website

"You must provide health surveillance to all employees who are likely to be regularly exposed to noise levels above the upper action levels or are at risk for any other reason eg they already suffer from hearing loss or are particularly sensitive to hearing damage."

If you have employees who work in low risk areas where they are not likely to be regularly exposed to high noise levels then there is no requirement for ongoing health surveillance. That doesn't mean that you can't provide it, it just means that you don't have to.

whilst it is a good idea my personal advise is not to provide such a service to those who do not come under the scope of the noise law as things provided, good intentioned or otherwise, can come back to bite you
