Posted By bluesail461 Hi, I spend a great deal of my time explaining to clients and contractors about the H&S File. I wont bore everyone reading this with what a H&S File should contain but I am very surprised and concerned at the lack of understanding and knowledge from clients, architects and Principal Contractors about this subject. I often get O&M Manuals called 'H&S File' and no proper H&S File at all. From a Contract point of view I know the NBS form of Contract now has in its updated format a section on the Building manual which it splits into 4 parts, the last of which is the H&S File, but I was wondering what experience others have in this area. Because of this I devised a checklist (basically the ACOP plus a bit more stuff on top) which I issue to all parties concerned during the construction phase and ask them to "send me this and I'll do the rest but DON'T send me a full O&M Manual". This approach doesn't work so well for minor jobs where the O&M Manual might aswell BE the H&S File aswell. I've posted this in order to find out other peoples experiences/ views/ ideas etc and if theres any good guidance other than the ACOP which I can issue to Clients/ architects/ contractors rather than have to explain it all again and again at project meetings. Not a major grumble, more a Friday afternoon whinge! cheers jez

Posted By Ron Hunter Often, people provide the wrong information because they don't understand the purpose of the H&S File. There also has to be an understanding of proportionality, i.e. that there are Projects (large and small) which have little or no impact on the File for the Structure - e.g. major re-roofing on a large building or a scheme of Council Housing: Information for H&S File = zero.
