Posted By harrison1 I keep getting conflicting advice as to wether you could use the space under the stairs for storeage & the use as a recharging station for hoist batteries. I am aware from a risk perspective that this is not the most ideal place to carry out this activity but being short of space to store theese charging stations has lead to some interesting discussions. Any advice please

Posted By Tabs I would highlight this as a potential issue in my fire risk assessment, if the stairs are used during evacuation. Chargers can be a source of fire, and having combustibles under stairs is an unhealthy thing if the stairs are an escape route.
Ventilation may be another issue depending on the products and the ventilation arrangements.

Posted By Renny Thomson I discourage this practice for the reasons stated by Tabs. It dilutes the message that escape routes should be kept clear of storage and ignition sources. I have seen spare batteries being charged at a seperate workstation (office/base) and the hoists stored at the stair enclosure, but this is a slight compromise and noted in the FSRA. Beware of slings and other MH equipment being stored alongside the hoists in the stairwells.

Posted By Merv Newman Under-stairs storage is a constant niggle. I try to stop it whenever I can. The usuals are combustibles/flammables and cleaning or stationary stores.
Even if "non-combustibles" are specified it usually turns into inch/mile practices.
And you usually have to climb over/through all the junk to get to what you want. While banging your unprotected head on the stairs.
And as for recharging batteries, what was that about "well ventilated/no smoking/no naked lights" ?

Posted By Mike DF You might want to consider the manual handling issues if there is a low 'ceiling' caused by the stairs. Not a good idea to stoop when carrying heavy batteries
