We are developing a work-related driving policy based on a risk assessment (addressing the main issues of driver, vehicle and journey). We are having a lively debate about setting daily, weekly, monthly and annual driver mileage limits. Our drivers are not commercial drivers and are usually travelling to meetings and training courses etc.

I have seen reference to RoSPA campaign for a daily 350 mile limit, we are considering a 400 mile daily limit (along side a host of other control measures). There seem to be mixed feelings about mileage limits - what does everyone think?

It's not just the mileage that's an issue. It's the length of an 8 hour working day with perhaps a 350 mile drive there and back to the office on top of it. As long as you take a frequent break away from the vehicle, and don't feel fatigued you could drive as many miles as you wanted to.

There's quite a few considerations to take into account really. UK domestic driving regulations for vehicles under 3.5t (vans and car derived) limit it to 10 hours driving and an 11 hour working day, with some exclusions on certain profession's.

Though it sounds as though your staff are car drivers? It comes down to a duty of care really, to ensure that they are not being expected to do to much.

Agree with Stefan's points, but would also add that if you are setting a maximum driving distance then you should consider benchmarking it against a recognised standard such as RoSPA and not choosing an arbitrary figure.

Personally, I think 350 miles within a day is ample if people are also conducting other business. I recently went to a meeting in Manchester covering 400 miles. That is 3-4 hours driving each way, too much in my opinion.
