I have a friend who is desperate to complete the Nebosh general certificate but his company is not willing to fund the course and he is unable to fund it himself. Just wondering is there anyway he can get some help with funding, i know the course is approx £1k but there is no way he can come up with that money. Any information would be most grateful as he is desperate to get the qualification!
Cheers

I believe that there are schemes in place in both Scotland and Wales (Individual Learning Accounts) BUT none that I can find in England!

I couldn't find any funding when I did mine, the only option offered was the above loan.
:( It was money well spent tho!

You don't have to complete a course to sit the exams. You can 'self-study,' as I did. Not necessarily an easy route, but all the information you need is freely available on the internet. It is probably only suited to someone who already has a safety background.

You will need to find an exam centre willing to take an external candidate. You have to pay Nebosh directly (£90?), and the centre may also make a charge.

If someone really is desperate to get NGC I would think self-studying should be achievable.

Thanks alot for the response guys there may be a couple of options for him there. Could i just ask about the loan, what are the repayments like, I'm taking it its a set amount of money to pay back over a set amount of time?

The self study option might be his best route, he is a safety representative for the workforce but i think he may struggle a little as i don't think he has had the exposure. I think he would be better in a classroom learning from the tutor and others with differing experiences etc. I was a fish out of water when i did my course and just listening to some of the people on the course taught me alot. But thanks for the idea, i never knew you could self study so i will defo let him know!

Start my diploma next week, god I'm scared of all that work!

Instead of a block release course you could also look at a 32 week or similar night school course, I completed one run by my local college some years ago and only cost me 125 quid ex. exam fees

Hi John,
I took my Nebosh at a local further education college, it only cost £250 inc. exam fees, study material etc. May be worth trying that route

I dont how long ago it was when Joanne took her Cert but my local college charges £600 which seems expensive by comparison to the £250 she paid.
However the college runs price reduction schemes depending on your post code so it may be worth contacting your local college to see if they do something similar,
Mark
