Evening all,
I am trying to lay my eyes on any section of legislation which deals specifically with the fitting of check valves to the arms of 360 excavators .
My understanding would be that it is best practice for all excavators to have them fitted however i have been asked if there are cut off points in machine sizes where they would not be required e.g below 13 tonne machine. I am looking for the legislative guidance on the issue so i can push for fitting on all plant .
Thanks in advance ,
Philip Roche.

Hi Philip
If excavator conforms to ISO 8643: 1997 "Earth-moving machinery -- Hydraulic excavator and backhoe loader boom-lowering control device -- Requirements and tests", check valves should be fitted as standard at least on main boom hydraulic cylinders.
There USED to be a be an exemption for an excavator used for lifting where the Safe Working Load was less than 1 ton, but this was a VERY long time ago, and if a 1 ton load falls on your head your hard hat is unlikely to offer you much protection!

peter thanks,
That is the feedback i had gotten , that the machine was exempt depending on the load lifted etc. That then led to the question for further exemptions down to size. I was of the same opinion regarding the load falling , even the failure of a dipper arm on a smaller machine would result in a serious injury / death if the a groundworker was under the arm .
Thanks again , did you get that from a british standard ??

The exemption was if I recall written into an amendment to the Construction (Lifting Operations) Regulations 1961, and was definitely covered in an HSE guidance note in the PM series.
Our Technical Indexes OHSIS database took me to the current answer!
