Posted By james2000 Deal All i have encountered this issue: The forklift is rated 1800 kg at 500mm load center what is capacity of forklift at 600mm load center? multiply SWl(1800)by its load center (500mm)then divide by the new load center(600mm)=1500kg from Where this formula came and what is logic behind this?? Posted By Flic This looks very like the principle of moments. The turning moment that a force exerts is equal to the force multiplied by the perpendicular distance from the pivot. Hence a load of 1800 kg at a distance of 500mm is equivalent to a load of 1500 kg at a distance of 600 mm, since 1800 x 500 = 900 000 kg mm, and also 1500 x 600 = 900 000 kg mm (note to the purists, I do appreciate that these are not forces, but the force will be directly proportional to the masses in kg) Flic

Posted By MickN James, check the forklift manual, it should give you all the information you need. If you've already done that then some simple physics is what is being applied in your equation. As has been said by flic, it's to do with moments (which are exerted by weights). Think of it like a "seesaw", you have a forklift with a weight on the front which is being balanced by the permanent one on the back. Multiply the weight (kg) on the back by the distance between it and the centre of gravity of the forklift giving you the 'moment' on the back. To prevent the forklift from toppling over this should be greater than the 'moment' on the front. Mick

Posted By Penfold James. This formula (OLC X ORC / NLC = NRC) should only be used if you need to calculate a rated capacity from beyond the last load centre stated on the truck's capacity plate. I have written a lesson on this subject when I used to be an FLT Instructor. I strongly suggest no-one uses this unless they know EXACTLY what they are doing. I would be happy to answer in a lot more detail and send you some info if you can be a bit more specific in what you are asking. My email is shown with this post
