Hello all,
I apologise if this has been asked before but I am looking for some guidance for slip resistance testing of a marble floor. Is the pendulum test the best one to use to ascertain slip resistance and does any one know of any local companies in Surrey that offer that service? I have found a few further afield but there charges are extremely high.
The marble floor is in a main reception and has been down for 24+ years and i know this may sound stupid but turns in to an "ice rink" when it becomes wet (and yes we have tried matting, umbrella stands etc).
As always your help is much appreciated.
Thanks
Paul

the pendulum test is the HSE's method of choice, and certainly seams to give the most reliable results. However from what you have said the test will only confirm what you already know the marble floor is slippy when wet. For a marble floor of the age you have described I would be very surprised if the test did not come back as high risk if wet.
You can get some treatments that improve the surface roughness such as acid etching - but I can just see the uproar that would cause.
Unless you are thinking of changing the floor I would concentrate you efforts and money spend on control measures. In this case keeping the floor dry.
Brian.

Hi,
Keep the weather/dirt out because if you don't people will go over, if you can see your face in it expect to feel your backside on it so the saying goes. A large covered porch before the entrance door or a larger mat, does it cover across the whole entrance area, is it wide/long/new/effective enough to remove wet/dirt. If memory serves the pendulum method requires quite a bit of skill and experience to obtain meaningful results, I think it is supposed to imitate the heel's impact and can be used for wet or dry surfaces. An alternative is the surface micro-roughness meter eg. Surtronic which is fairly easy to use costs a few £100 but was rather unforgiving may be better know, we borrowed one from local EH try before you buy. I think HSE/EH had a scheme to do just that for this meter. The HSE ran a superb road show some years ago have you looked at their website:
