Posted By Safe System hi all, after another frustrating phone call to the HSE info line i am coming here for my advice! How often do self-contained oasis units powered by an on board generator need to be inspected? thanks,

Posted By Ron Hunter Does the Unit require to be earthed when in use?

Posted By Safe System It is earthed as far as a transportable building can be? - bearing in mind these are moved around aprox every 8-12 weeks usually.

Posted By SteveD-M I think most are making a statement that this is a discussion forum not an advice line... Best free advice line... http://www.hse.gov.uk/el...y/maintenance/safety.htm

Posted By SteveD-M User checks - 110 V – Weekly 230 V mains – Daily/every shift. Formal Inspection - 110 V – Monthly. Combined Inspection & test - 230 V – weekly 110 V – Before first use on site then 3 monthly 230 V mains – Before first use on site then monthly. General guidance as you will also require manufacturers recommendations and you have not clearly explained how it is used. Doesn't it feel good to shoot the messenger...

Posted By Safe System But isn't that based around the HSE guideline for portable appliance testing? I am referring to oasis units (site offices as a whole) *removes remaining bullets from the gun...

Posted By Ron Hunter Safe System: If as you say the Unit requires to be earthed, then that will mean providing sufficient earth spikes (which will depend on ground conditions, prospective fault current), and a full electrical test & certification of that temporary installation at each move (much as we would do for Construction Project temp. accommodation units with power and light). So.......I think you answer your own question - every 8- 12 weeks?

Posted By Flic For those of us not in the know, it was not immediately apparent what you were talking about, and Google did not help. Clearly every time this thing is installed in a new position it needs a careful check. I would also suggest checks in between if the people using the site have any tendency to damage the installation and threaten its integrity. Flic

Posted By SteveD-M I think he is referring to a portacabin. See previous thread. http://www.iosh.co.uk/in...iew&forum=1&thread=41668

Posted By FAH Safe System - I'm assuming that your problem is in the UK. In which case, essentially you must do a risk assessment to determine both the frequency and extent of testing that you consider is essential to maintain the electrical safety of the unit[s]to an acceptable standard in the work, transport & storage conditions that will foreseeably arise. This will take in to account any odd specific legislative requirement [eg COMAH, ATEX, DSEAR sites etc] and also incorporate any client imposed requirements which will be, at best, variable. Posted By Ian Gardner Jenny, How exactly would an instrument calibration laboratory be able to advise on this matter?
