Some of our offices are being re-fitted with new office furniture and I would like to check the legal requirements for the walkways between desks. 800mm rings a bell?

Many thanks

dont forget the DDA regs as if it is likely that a DDA situation may arrise you probably need more space

Do the DDA regs specify a distance between desks?

DDA would not specifically apply to spaces between desks unless you have a MIP employee in that area or they are likely to access thata rea, then minimum wicht for a wheelchair to access and turn would be needed.

I imagine it's all dependent on doorway width. If the doorway won't allow a wheelchair, well, you do the maths.

750mm's a standard doorway width but a wheelchair will require 800mm (this from Fire Safety - Employer's Guide)

BS 8300: 2001 Design of buildings and their approaches to meet the needs of disabled people (which has just been updated to 2009 edtion, which I haven't yet read) gives space standards between a row of desks of 1550 to 2050, to give access and turning space for a wheelchair to the desk.

The 900mm figure is the width of a corridor - the standards says you need a clear width of 1800 mm to allow two wheelchair users to pass each other in a corridor, 900 mm clear space where doors open into a corridor and a clear width of corridor not less than 1200 mm.
