Posted By Witty Butserious Hi All,
Apologies if this may be a FAQ, but I am new to this board I have been asked by my company to assist one of our engineers in a HAZOP study. The bones of the project involve the installation of piping, valves, storage tanks and scrubbers etc into a brewing plant. I am ‘Safety Advisor/Hazop Documentor’ for the study and have already been well briefed on the project and the possible risks. My question is this; what exactly is the role of the safety person in a Hazop study? I think my role in this situation is to assist my colleague in answering any safety related questions that the brewery engineers should have regarding the design. Our engineer has obviously designed the system, so surely he is in a better position to answer the questions than I am? BTW - I am quite confident after a few ‘dry runs’ that the design process has properly addressed H&S I would appreciate comments from anyone else who has carried out Hazop studies in the past and was affiliated to the designer as opposed to the client. Thanks

Posted By Andy Petrie I would also reccomend that you think about the OP side of things, designers tend to get caught up in what they are designign and forget it needs to be used and maintained once built.

Posted By Andy Brazier I would not anticipate you having too great a role. As you say, answer any questions and intervene if you think the engineers have missed something or got it wrong. It is important you speak up if you have something to say, but the HAZOP leader should make sure all issues are discussed.

Posted By Suffolkman I also found there is a good preview of 'Kletz' on google books (about 40 pages)
If it was me i would take it a great learning opportunity and book the CPD points
Enjoy!!
Useful thread for me as im just studying it, many thanks

Posted By Witty Butserious As it happened, my role in the HAZOP meeting was fairly limited. The Safety Advisor for the Brewery was very much involved for obvious reasons and asked lots of questions. In a situation like this I think the role of the Safety Advisor for the designer is to assure the client that safety was a high priority during the design, will be during installation and that the system can be safely maintained. These meetings can get very tricky i.e. engineers doing their best to subtly heap costs on each other and get the best deal for themselves. I’m not even sure if the HAZOP study was about Hazard Identification or Operability at all. It’s disheartening when engineers ‘hijack’ H&S as a way of getting what they want. I can’t say it was an uplifting experience. Thanks for all the helpful comments.
