Methyl Ethyl Keytone ( MEK ) replacement is there one that works?

Posted By pyranah Can anyone help? The organisation I work for currently use MEK as a cleaning solution, it is excellent for cleaning metal rollers, it removes just about anything adhesive /grease / dirt and silicone. It evaporates fast and leaves no residue which is critical for our process, The problem is it’s not the safest product to work with and I want to stop using it on site.
I have been trying without success to replace it with something less hazardous but im struggling.
Has anyone successfully managed to replace MEK for another product?
If so please could you let me know what you have replaced it with so I could trial it?
Thank you in advance

Posted By stephen d clarke Hi, To my mind acetone would be the obvious choice as its WEL limits are higher, I think it is less of a hazard with regards to health, skin absorption etc but it is more volatile and therefore more of a fire risk. I guess it depends on the quantity used and exposure potential i.e. down to your COSHH assessment. I think MEK is in the table for biological monitoring. In the past we moved from acetone to MEK but then back to acetone a year or so later for a wire cleaning process superconductivity process. steve

Posted By Robert K Lewis All the lower Ketones have similar properties with the flashpoint becoming lower as the mol. weight increases. On this basis MEK is one of the safer solvents.
It can be exceedingly difficult to find substitutes and the possibilities are limited by your precise process needs. Only your production people will be able to tell you if residues are critical or whether the cleaning process can be modified to eliminate the vapour issues.
One should also remember that you will be swapping one set of hazards and controls for another - this can lead to confusion in the minds of operatives and inappropriate methods of work could then be used.

Posted By Chris Packham There is an alternative method of cleaning rollers, etc. that I have seen used with considerable success, but it is not the cheapest in terms of setting up.
This uses CO2 in pellet form and compressed air to shot blast the rollers. Benefits are that there are no solvents to handle or dispose of, it is relatively quick and generally safe - given adequate ventilation.
However, there is a capital cost in setting up the system.
If you are interested drop me an e-mail and I will send you information. (Moderators - in anticipation that - as has happened in the past - someone will complain that I am touting for business, I have no financial connection at all with the company that supplies this and am only attempting to be of help.)
