I am not aware of any formula for the provision of an assembly point area. The location and size of the area will depend on a number of factors ie the size of the workforce, vehicle (emergency) access, convenience as well as other practical matters.

Hi,
Also not aware of any formula - it depends upon a number of factors such as: number of staff, typical number of visitors/public, number of others if multi-occupied building, far enough away fom the building so no danger from the fire or collapse of building, sufficient access for fire service, safe from vehicles. If there are a large number of staff then you may need several places of assembly around the building, also issue of communication to be considered, do you do a roll call or do your fire wardens sweep the building.

The Building Standards and the Event Safety guide gives an occupancy load factor of 0.5 for places of general assembly.
I would suggest that if you use this to work out your needs then you will not go wrong.

You should also consider speaking to your local fire department. I am sure they would jump at the chance to help out.

In the case of an assembly area for fire, you need to position it so that you can always turn your back on the fire and walk away to a place of safety. This precludes using any place that is effectively walled in, and usually means that it is a fairly open place. Size is then not so much of an issue.
