Posted By Barrie (Badger) Etter Hi Does anyone know of companies who supply ergonomic work bench seating with a remit for back pain sufferers? Web sites a bonus, dirct contact names /phone numbers appreciated.
I have a chap who has put a disc out (lower lumbar region I believe) and wishes to return to work but his bench is around waist height where he performs intricate soldering.
All response are appreciated.
Regards, Badger

As a safety ergonomist, may I encourage you to have a much, much, much more ergonomic approach to this issue than simply rely on replacing the employee's workbench (even though this may be part of appropriate prevention of foreseeable further injury).
Unless you work through the preventive measures profiled in Schedule 1 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regs 1999, you and your employer may be 'cruising for a bruising' even more than the employee with the vulnerable back.

Posted By Kieran J Duignan The following companies supply ergonomic work bench seating 1. www.trestonltd.co.uk2. www.sono-uk.com3. www.qumuk.comThe 'remit for back pain sufferers' has to come from the 'safety-competent' person who ensures that the seat and workbench are compatible with the body-measurements of the user and his/her tasks. If the 'safety-competent' person doesn't know how to establish this compatbility, he can learn to do so from 'Bodyspace: Anthropometry, Ergonomics and the Design of Work'. S Pheasant & C Haslegrave, CRC Press, 2003 3rd edition. As musculo-skeletal disorders tend to recur, it may later be necessary to introduce job rotation and other corective controls for complaince with the PUWER 98 and the MHSWR 99
