Hi all, quick question;

I hsd an auditor in for OSHAS and one thing was asked for was a thorough examination for intallation of pallet racking and a regular inspection regime.

Please could those with experience in this field advise on what they do to cover this and also is there any particular regs / guidance for this.

Thanks in advance

Storage facilities and racking are real "Cinderellas", being so common that they are overlooked, often with tragic consequences.

For additional guidance on this subject look at "SEMA" Storage Equipment Manufactures Association website.

Lots of useful information, including SEMA COP's and a list of SEMA Approved Inspectors

we have always inspected our racking once a month by a sema trained racking inspector(sema run courses) then we have an annual independent inspection by an outside company not related to the racking supplier.

Hi There

The method of inspection and the recommended inspection frequency has some mention in HSG76 but the Storage Equipment Manufacturers Guidance (SEMA) Users Code contains a lot more information. In brief an inspection is recommended to be carried out by a competent person (SEMA Approved Inspector) once a year and monthly interim inspections by a trained in-house employee.
A SEMA Approved Inspector (SARI) should inspect to a standard method and supply the client with a report explaining there findings. An inspection should include an examination of all visible components and the categorisation of damage into green, amber or red categories.
An inspection of the construction of the installation to its manufacture’s standards.
An inspection of the loads.
An examination on how it is being used and loaded.
SEMA are the trade association for racking and will be able to answer many of your questions, they will also have a list of approved inspectors on their site. I work for a business called SESS Ltd who you can also find on the list and we will be willing to give you advice if you call us.
