Posted By Kevin Kelly Hello All, I work for a medium sized engineering company that operates on numerous sites throughout the country and was wondering if there is any software package out there that aids the tracking of equipment/tools across the various sites. What I have in mind would be some sort of barcode system that you can scan when doing weekly inspections and the results can be downloaded there and then. At the moment so much time is taken up with trying to figure out what has migrated onto/off site and chasing certification. I know in an ideal world all equipment should be logged in and out but in the ever changing world of construction and short term contracts thats not always possible. I dont know if such a system exists, if not then maybe someone with a bit more inguinity than myself could put something together!!

Posted By Dave Merchant There are a number of database-driven systems that would work, most originally designed for inventory tracking, but will fit what you're trying to achieve. On the PAT test route there are similar bits of software, or you could build something in Access to fit what you're recording. Physically there's an RFID 'inspection tracking' system available (Lyon Equipment sell it, amongst others) and barcoding is simple enough to do yourself, especially if your database lives on a website. I suggest reading the next issue of HSW for more on that.
