Posted By Brian M. Jones There used to be a guy working for Key Health and Safety a number of years ago, who was heavily into NLP. However, his name escapes me at the moment, but I do know that he moved on to another training organisation.

Posted By Ian G Hutchings Hi I developed a course entitled "Internal consultancy skills for health and safety practitioners". This includes some NLP related information. No factual evidence as such, but it draws on NLP as a tool that can be used by practitioners. I could see if I can dig out that part of the course for you if you want? Drop me an email if I can help. Best wishes Ian

Posted By Mark Eastbourne I believe that SHP had an article which showed the relationship between the two, example used was a worker going in a deep excavation which he thought he was allowed to do without fear for his safety as his supervisor was there watching him and after all, if he did not think it was dangerous...

Posted By daz658 Hi Martin, Some of the many tools and techniques that are available through NLP are massively relevant to Safety. Especially, as you suggest, in the areas of positively influencling behaviour. We have developed a 1 day workshop with a nationwide distribution company aimed at changing their drivers' behaviour as they were taking too many risks unnecessarily. NLP can also give a fresh approach to training including accelerated learning techniques which can be useful when conducting NEBOSH or IOSH courses where delegates need to retain lots of information over a short period of time. This is a fascinating area which I believe is still largely untapped by safety professionals. Feel free to contact me to discuss further. Darren

Posted By Kieran J Duignan Martin Your request is specifically concerned about 'research' on NLP in safety: you may find some fine research articles online in back issues of the International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics, published by Reed Elsevier. At the first international conference on NLP took place last year at the University of Surrey, some of the papers presented might be of interest to you. Dr Paul Tosey in the Management School at UniS is in a position to provide you with the CD sent to all those who attended.

Posted By db Is there any evidence that NLP works at all? One of the co-founders of NLP has distanced himself from it as it has become "management/life coaching" mumbo jumbo. But don't let the absence of facts put you off. I find facts just cloud my judgement and prefer relying on blind faith and instinct rather than any empirical evidence. But I'm sure there'll be many people disagreeing.

Posted By daz658 NLP is certainly not the "magic bullet" or curer of all ills that some people claim it to be. However, if you accept that all behaviours are driven from peoples attitudes, beliefs and values, then some pretty powerful results can be achieved. These techniques have been used to great effect in business, the sporting world (Mourinho, Murray and Jordan) and increasingly in therapy to help people overcome many difficulties that were previously thought to be impossible to resolve without drugs or other quite horrific treatments that were used in the 60s and early 70s. There are sceptics out there, as there will always be when people don't fully understand how things work, but if used in the right way, by the right people and with people who are open to change, NLP can be a very powerful tool that can be used effectively in many areas, including safety.

Posted By mattadsafety Hi Martin, With regard to your question about research, as far as i am aware, there is no documented 'evidence' available. However, i am a safety consultant working primarily within the NHS and i use NLP techniques in every area of my work. I am a Master Practitioner of NLP and an NLP trainer. NLP is an incredibly useful tool if your aim is to change behaviours and attitudes towards workplace safety, and the use of NLP language patterns when delivering safety training is a very powerful technique for accelerated learning. NLP has become more accepted by many organisations and, as previously stated, is commonplace in the world of sports and entertainment. I will have a look for some 'documented' research into the subject and post here if i can find any. Mark Sherwood

Posted By Stephen Bridgehouse Martin, I am interested in doing a NLP course because I believe there is scope to implement this in influencing safety behaviour and attitudes within an organisation. I've found a company who runs courses on NLP and they charge around £1200 for five days. The provider is kim.blackmore@indigoeagle.com
