Hi All,

IYO - What's the best form of protection for operatives connecting services when working on a public road - 40mph speed limit.

Excavation will be open in parts for over a week.

Thanks.

Best form of protection would be road closure. However, as it would not be possible, the area concerned should be adequately cordoned off with appropriate signage. Most importantly, training the staff.

Dave's right. You must be trainjed in and follow what is set ou in the Streets Works Regs. If you don't know what you're doing in relation to this topic then you need to leave this well alone and get in expert advice (asking for advice on the IOSH forum is not sufficient in this instance IMO).

..can I just say thanks for taking that advice so well.

So many people get uptight when it's mentioned that they may be out of their depth. So it's nice to see such a response. We all have our limitations and being able to accept that is to the credit of the individual concerned.

The advice above to seek expert support is not just a matter of good practice. There are specific legal requirements under NRSWA for certain persons undertaking street works to have gained an approved qualification.

Suggest you have a word with whichever utility company owns the stuff you are connecting; they will usually have approved contractors that they use to plan, establish and maintain a set of road works.

Suggest you contact the local Highway Authority. They will provide advice on the standards necessary, as well as the need to book road space for the work.

Your operatives are not the only group at risk.
NRSW Chapter 8 refers.

The work will come under the provisions of the:

a. Highways Act
b. New Roads and Streetworks Act (if for utility purposes or under a Section 50 Licence
c. ans not forgetting the HASAWA 1974
d. Traffic Management Act.

Legal guidence given in Safety at Streetworks and Roads Works Approved Code of Practice (for utility works) and Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual as a guidance document.

Under a Streetworks Act, operatives and supervisors will need to be qualified as required of the Regulations issued under the provisions of the Act.

Asking the question, What to you need to do?, are you therefore competent to do the work or should you contract this out to a competent contractor...
