Posted By Melanie Fellows Hello,
I've been asked for a list or plan of what I think would be required when refurbishing the hull of a boat in Spain.
The boat would be taken out of the water and secured (by the dock people) prior to works commencing.
The hull would be grit blasted and hand prepared, then filled and re-painted.
So obviously risk assessments for each of those processes. There's the environmental aspects to consider, which includes spill kits and procedures.
The area would need to be suitably barriered off with appropriate signage. The operatives need to be suitably trained etc. The method of access needs assessing (so far I'm assuming mobile tower). PPE, storage of equipment, COSHH, MSDS, HAVs.
Am I missing anything? All input gratefully received.

COSHH in Spain? You will need to see what is the relevant legislation and the applicable standards there, surely.

Posted By Melanie Fellows Yes, it is something I need to investigate further.
The boat yard in question hasn't asked for any information at all - the package of information has been requested by my boss (whose boat it is) as he is now very used to being asked to submit all appropriate paperwork prior to commencement of any works.
He just accepts that if it's needed for his business, he wants it to cover his pleasure/ personal life too (hope that makes sense?).

I am not familiar with Spanish law, but I would imagine that as he has contracted for the yard in Spain to carry out the work, then it is their responsibility to ensure that they comply with their national laws.
Put it this way, when you take your car in for service do you expect to risk assess the workshop?

Posted By Colin Reeves Agree with Chris - the norm is that a contract is made between the owner and the yard, the yard taking over responsibility. After all, they will be the employer.
However, some yards in the UK (and probably Spain) offer the facilities, but the actual work done by the Owners staff (or the Owners contractors). In this case there may well be a need for the owner to put in place appropriate risk assessments / systems of work etc.
Would suggest in that case contacting the Spanish yard to see if they can assist with local rules - it will not be the first time that they will have dealt with this!

Posted By Melanie Fellows Ah yes, but the problem is that we are doing the work, not the yard.
