Hi Guys

Reviewing contractor mgt requirements at our site and looking for a recognised qualification or demonstration of competency that is required for a contractor to install and decommission gas pipe works for fixed welding booths.(or any gas pipe works i suppose)

The gas pipework is for acetylene, hydrogen, oxygen and natural gas which are all all fixed installation pipework as opposed to cylinders.

A corgi fitter (we are in Northern Ireland) for the natural gas but is there an alternative for the other 3 gases?

Thanks for any help you can give.

CORGI as it was [Centrica as it is now? - put me right sombody if I have it wrong] is only for small domestic gas installations

A properly trained industrial pipe fitter [instrumentation fitter in some cases] that is if we have any trades left! Would be able to undertake the work

Qualifications would usually follow the C&Guids with experience route. As yet CITB and similar are not as up to date as they could be re electro/mechanical construction trades as they have concentrated on the civil's [they are getting there] but I would still check with that type of organisation

One area that you cannot get any kind of academic qualification for is Coded welding -its all down to the skill level and its probably a coded welder that you want for the welded joints

Best of luck and I would seek competent help if you feel that it is outside your field of expertise!

The previous poster was correct on domestic gas and the new certification scheme.

To answer your question in detail I advise a quick look at the British Compressed Gas Association web site:

http://www.bcga.co.uk/

BCGA is the professional body for industrial gases. They have all the real information on industrial installations and if your contractor does not know of them or of the installation guides; I would certainly question his competence.

Bob,

Following from The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, may be of interest to you.

Duty on employer

4. Where an employer or a self-employed person requires any work in relation to a gas fitting to be carried out at any place of work under his control or where an employer or self-employed person has control to any extent of work in relation to a gas fitting, he shall take reasonable steps to ensure that the person undertaking that work is, or is employed by, a member of a class of persons approved by the Health and Safety Executive.

Again the person approved by HSE are currently registered with CORGI. (For NI)

The new gas safety register is run by Capita Group PLC and came into effect from 1st April 2009.

Whilst the register highlights those gas engineers competent for domestic premises, some are also competent to cover commercial premises (providing the appropriate training and qualifications are completed).

I would be more confident in using a commercial gas engineer to intall industrial gas pipelines rather than an industrial pipefitter.

However, I would suggest contacting an industrial gas supplier like BOC, Linde, Air Products etc for further guidance.
