Hi
Just a quick question
when lifting loads is it permissible to link up different types of slings e.g. 2 leg chain slings whith websling on hooks, the web sling is then placed arond load and load lifted
Can see section in BS 7121 where it states if its ok or not.
SWL not exceeded and lidr being proeprly marshalled.
I would have said that only one sling should be used for the lift.
Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks
Paul

Just a quick answer then for the avoidance of disappointment ;-{)
You will not find an answer in BS7121.
The combination you describe should be adequate for the task assuming that the weight of the object is within the WLL of the slings, the object is devoid of sharp edges and is not something with a high enough temperature to affect the integrity of the webbing sling.
Of course this assumes that the competent person will have taken cognisance of the D/d ratios at the connection points, the angles between the slings that affect the WLL and the gripping effect of the slings.
Depending on the type of lifting operation being undertaken, the operative may have to use many different types and combinations of wire slings, round slings, webbing slings, hooks, shackles, chain blocks, pull lifts, Tirfors and etc. to effect a safe lifting operation.
It’s a small world but I wouldn’t want to paint it as an old Rigger once told me.

Hi Paul,
Like the buses - you wait for ages the two come at once.
The reason I think you didn't get much of a responce is that the question requires a specific competence that is outside most of the H&S professionals' knowledge and not that nobody could be bothered. However, I liked your comment!
The real answer is IMO - if the person/people organsing the lift don't know the answer then the required competence isn't there and therefore the lift is potentially unsafe and shouldn't go ahead. Its all to do with the slinger's competence. Slingers should be specifically trained to undertake the role.
I'm sorry if this sounds a bit negative (it's been a hard day) but it doesn't stop it being true. The question does however demonstrate one aspect of your competence - you know when to ask for help so well done.
All the best,
TonyB
