Has anybody had any experience with this scheme?

How does it compare to other schemes such as CCNSG / SCATS?

Thanks, Neil.

Neil,

I am a ECITB-CCNSG Safety Passport tutor, and the passport, and the ACE card are completely different although part and parcel of the same professional organisation; the ECITB.

ACE is an initiative that will assess the competence of the entire skilled ECI on-site onshore workforce against National Occupational Standards.

The aim of the CCNSG Safety Passport Scheme is to ensure a basic knowledge of health and safety for all site personnel to enable them, after appropriate site induction, to work on site more safely with lower risk to themselves and others.

ACE currently covers the following trades:

Welding (Pipework & Plate)
Plating
Erecting
Mechnical Fitting (including Maintenance)
Pipefitting (including Instrument)
Electricians (including Maintenance) affiliation with JIB card
Rigging

Go to www.ace.uk.net for further info.

That's going to assure elf and safety just like the CSCS does?
You mention the JIB, An electrician having S/JIB accreditation doesn't assure anything.
If anyone needs to take an extortionately priced course in inspection and testing or wiring regulations - which they should be able to derive from first principles - they shouldn't be working with electricity.
Merely another organisation to tax and govern a trade.

Frank,

Neil asked a specific question over the difference between the two cards, which I responded to. If you have an issue with the value and worth of the ACE card then I suggest you take it up with ECITB.

Like Frank, I suspect, I have deep mistrust of the vatious card schemes when they are used as evidence of H&S competence. None were ever designed for this purpose and I see absolutely no signs of any card scheme ever doing this form of competence assurance. Most of these schemes rely on employers not understanding the differences between training and competence. Not an uncommon siutation and likely to continue unfortunately. These cards play right into the hands of site management personnel who are looking to tick the box and move on.

For me, as long as this situation persists then the appalling accident statisitics will remain as they are.
