Hi
Does anyone know if a flooring company would be able to provide slip / grip testing information on their product prior to being installed.
Is this a reasonable request & would you ask for it in advance to a contract being signed?

I have a flooring company & the polish supplier coming on site today to discuss recent slip, grip accidents on a new floor & am having to get past internal resistance to get to the suppliers.

Any advice on what we should be asking for would be appreciated to ensure I dont miss anything during my one shot at them.

Currently have:
Should the floor be polished?
Are we using the correct polish, equipment, ratio, frequency
Floor designed to grip FLT tyres so is this suitable for high pedestrain areas wearing rubber soled safety shoes?

Trevor, manufacturers should be able to provide safety data sheet which will define the slip resistance properties of the product.

You're looking for a Pendulum Test Value (PTV). You can then look at the thresholds in the UK Slip Resistance Groups guidance and decide whether it's suitable for your purposes.

btw, don't be fobbed off with 'Ramp Test' data, PTV is the real standard.

If they seem confused by any of these phrases, I'd say they're not people you should be dealing with.

Trevor,

the supplier should be able to provide details, although they will no doubt have not calculated the factors of using floor polish.

I would be looking at the cost effectiveness and frequency you polish the floor, as is normally an aesthetic reason for ease on the public eye, especially if the floor is also used for FLT use I would expect polish to not be too long lasting?

There are various products on the market for cleaning floors like this such as Johnsons who may be of help to provide the right product?

Trevor,

Give this guy an email, Michael Aiken - michael@safetydirectglobal.org

He treats (with a non-slip product) and tests (with the tortus and pendulum) our floors quarterly. He acts as an expert witness, is very helpful and will put you right with any queries you may have.

Trevor

this is an area that the HSE are pretty active in at the moment, have a look at their site for some very good information.

We went into dispute with a company on a floor they had put in. In the end we went to BRE http://www.bre.co.uk/ to come in on our behalf as experts.

BRE is a research org and a charity so no ties to flooring manufacturers, impartial technical advice.
