Posted By Chris G I am currently reviewing the risk assessment for lone working for a team of engineers at a manufacturing plant. Identification of lone working situations is fine however I am stuck on ideas for practical control measures. The engineers (mostly self directed in terms of task and location) may be scattered throughout the premises with many side rooms, stores and several buildings off the main work areas and work includes antisocial hours. Lone worker alarms are considered ineffective as the building acts as a Faraday cage cutting out radio signal and a large number of elderly induction furnaces create significant radio static. Any suggestions for practicaly applicable control measures would be apreciated. Thanks in advance, Chris G

Posted By Alex.wilkes I suggest working through the hierachy of control measures and see what you can do from there. First asking yourself can the method of working alone be avoided? Thus Eliminating the need to lone work. Reduce the length of time required to work alone may be a suggestion. If working in areas where there is machinery that doesn't need using or electrical systems can they be isolated and shut off. But you really need to identify specific hazards in each worker area first and assess the level of risk associated. Only then can you identify specific control measures. If you have identified specific hazards in each work area I will be happy to help you with the controls. Drop me an email.

Posted By Briony Bruce Hi Chris, Have you looked at lone worker devices with Sim cards? Argyll has launched a new range of lone worker services - Communicare options.this ranges from a simple emergency alert to a full lone worker monitoring system depending on the level of risk. Let me know if this would be of any interest to you? Briony

Posted By William O'Donnell I agree with the comments around the hierarchy of controls. In my experience 'lone working' often has more to do with 'custom & practice' than any practical considerations. I have an issue with staff who carry out home visits. It is rare that anyone, either permanently or temporarily disabled, is totally house bound. But the attitude is that they must have a home visit if they want one. Anyway the point that I am making, poorly, is take a critical look at why people are lone working, rather than creating a risk then looking to control it.
