Posted By Sam Bracken Greetings to all. I am attempting to retire flexibly from my job as a Health, Safety & Wellbeing Officer (Local Authority DC) My proposal is to work a three day week whilst drawing my pension and retire fully in June 2013. The powers that be have decided that the Authority should have an "understudy" to tick the succession planning box. Due to the economic situation, the "understudy" would have to come from within the Authority, study for the NEBOSH Cert' and shadow me for an as yet undefined period of time. Offers of help and advice would be very much appreciated. Sam.

Posted By clairel Sam, I'm a little baffled as to what you are asking from us. You seem to be straying a little close to advertising a position here. I'm quite suprised the mods haven't locked the thread. Maybe you could elaborate as to what it is you want in advice?

Posted By Richard Altoft Sam, could be a delight to teach someone what you know and bring them along provided they are the right person and not just dropped on you. Can you write a job description and a career development plan and be involved in interviewing etc. If so what a good way to end a career in H&S knowing you have not left a vacuum. R

Posted By Sen Sar Hi Sam I think this is a great idea. Teach from the vast experience you have to offer. I (IMHO) just feel you have a relutance to retirement, which I also understand. Enjoy your time doing all the things you promised youeself you would do...............no regrets. Live the life you deserve through hard work and in that process educate your juniors. Good luck Sam

Posted By Gus Your very lucky... take the opportunity with both hands, as this would probably not happen in a commercial business, where they would take the opportunity to downsize/ contract out etc...

Posted By GeoffB4 Something is niggling me about reduced pension entitlement - you're sure it doesn't affect your pension having the last years at a reduced income?

Posted By Sam Bracken Hello all and thank you for your advice. John/Ted. My understudy has to come from within due to the financial situation. Claire. I am most certaintly not advertising a position as this would be beyond my remit. On mature reflection I should have asked for advice from someone in a similar position to myself. Richard, Sen, Gus. I have never written a JD before so I shall seek advice from HR on this. Geoff. I am led to believe that I can downsize and cash in my pension but I take your point and I will research this further. Regards to all. Sam.

Posted By Ron Hunter Ultimately then you'd have a LA with one newly qualified (NGC level) and with very little experience. I think a LA needs more than that to satisy the appointed person part of Management Regs. Are there others in the Team? The moratorium on external recruitment is pretty widespread in LAs folks.
