I have been tasked to assess the hazards of undertaking a needle exchange process in a busy pharmacy has anyone any experience of the risks involved in this practice considering the staff, general customers and the clients of this service. Most of the staff are shocked and very concerned at the potential health risk.

A friends brother had a problem with drugs many years ago. From what I recall he was provided with clean sterile needles and an untamperable sharps container for his used ones.

As far as I am aware there was no risk to anyone other than his brother by shooting crap up his arm or where ever.

It was a very discreet process and the staff got to know why he was in the chemist and it was done on the qt.

Better confined than in the street or a kiddies playground.

The user puts the dirty needles in the sharps bin and is given clean needles.

No contact by staff with dirty needles.

The main potential risk that clients have had to consider is potential violence from drug users, but that is no different than from those going into get their methodone.

In my experience most pharmacists know their 'users' and know which ones to trust and what to look out for. But I've never known any to have any problems.

It's generally all done pretty discreetly.
