After looking at some posts, i have found there are a lot of posts where people are repeating answers over and over.. (guilty of this myself)
so.
how about a feature where the originator of the post can mark it as satisfied - therefore locking the thread?
this would save peoples time and allow clear, concise answers without reading through pages of info..

But this might lead to clear concise but incorrect answers.

I'm not a fan of this idea.
Firstly, as Jack says, the answers provided to a question may not be correct, despite the enquirer being 'happy' that they have the right answer.
Secondly, this isn't a Q&A service, it's a discussion forum. Giving the thread starter the ability to lock a thread because the believe they have all the info they need will just stifle further input from other posters.

Does anybody else see the irony here of answers being repeated?
I think the idea's pretty good. Even if the poster receives incorrect information, it's up to them to satisfy themself that the information they have received is relevant and correct.
Once they have satisfied themself - even if that means waiting to receive multiple posts with the same information then 'check' - Matter closed.

I cannot support this idea. Posters who offer repeat ideas do so either to reinforce or support a previously expressed opinion, to counter another opinion or because they haven't read the full thread.
Some threads have repeat ideas but expressed in very entertaining ways, others are very boring. I'm happy to read the former but who's to say that boring to me is not fascinating to other bores?

I think that was Peter F's point

This is a discussion forum. Who is to decide (other than the moderators) when the discussion should be terminated?
Consider the following:
1. A contributor may have been away on business, holiday, etc. and returns to find that they can make a useful contribution or that a posting might contain incorrect information. What if the thread is locked?
2. A contributor has made a contribution, then finds that due to information in a subsequent posting, they need to add information. Again, a locked thread would render this impossible.
If the originator of the thread feels that they have all the information they need, then they have a simple answer. Just dont' look at this thread any more! If others wish to continue the discussion why should they be prevented for so doing?

When you put it that way i can see the argument against is far greater and makes more sense...
My thoughts were not aimed at multiple answers that lead to the right answer... more when people see the question and - i have been guilty of this - do not really sit there and read the responses, merely just type their answer which has already been said 5 times before....
So maybe as a change.. all those wanting to post a new answer.. read the current responses and if it has been answered (albeit not in the wording you may like) don't waste yours or anyone else's time in writing the same thing.

But one could always start a new thread if you feel you have something to offer after a thread was locked. Might make the whole thing much tidier and reduce workplace stress for some! But I doubt it somehow.
