Posted By Scott Finding Hopefully a quick one. I am a special constable which gives me the same training as a regular police officer including 'Police First Aider' qual. I work for a factory based engineering company in my civvie job, the question is, will my Police First Aider qual be sufficient for First Aid at Work status or will I have to do a further course to tick the box? Thanks in advance for your replies.

Posted By PMW It does depend what your qualification actually is. I am aware that you can be a 'qualified - St John's Ambulance' first aider, yet not suitably qualified to carry out first aid in a work environment. Crazy. Can you clarify what qualification you currently hold?

Posted By Scott Finding It is the standard 'Police First Aider', trained by a First Aid professional trainer. The idea being I can deal with anything from RTC victims, through to Fire victims whilst waiting for ambo to arrive. All Police Officers are trained 'Police First Aiders'.

Posted By Dave Merchant NPIA module 4 is "first aid at work" in the legal sense, i.e. it meets the HSE requirements for the FAAW syllabus, 24hrs training time, etc. and allows officers to be listed as the workplace first aider of record for a station. Modules 1 through 3 do not. If you have NPIA4 you can be a civvy workplace first aider, but you may have to prove to your employer (and their insurer) precisely what you've got if the certificate doesn't use the magic words "first aid at work".

Posted By Adam Worth As for the comment about St John first aiders - To be a duty 1st aider you have to hold FAW, Its the other way it doesn't work, and even qualified medical professionals working for St John (Such as Drs and Nurses) can find themselves having to do FAW courses. - This however makes sense as the knowledge is specialised - it's been discussed before on these forums. Dave has answered the original question so I hope no minds me going off on a tangent.

Posted By GaryS Scott the first aid training that you will have received as a special constable does not allow you to carry out the functions as a first aid at work employee. I assume the training you receive as a special is only of a few hours duration or at most a day unlike the FAW course which is longer. It may also only deal with pertinent police injuries such as stab, cuts, and breathing issues. However, it may permit you to act as an appointed person but you should check with your force training or safety unit.
