Fire Warden Refresher - done forum search on this topic

Posted By May Warley Hi All,
I have carried out forum search on the topic mentioned above(last one was in 2006) but need opinion from the forum users here, as I'm getting confused by opinions given. I have been approached by H&S companies to carry out the refresher course although we have carried one out last year. We carry out weekly fire alarm and sprinkler tests as well as fire drill every 6 months. One company recommended us to do the refresher course every 12 months. Most of the previous responses to this topic specified on the fire risk assessment. I know I will get 'attacked' again here but I am only trying to do it right the first time. Can I know, since the last post in 2006, if there is a specified frequency on doing the fire warden refresher course on the RRO?

We use the drills - talk to the wardens before the drill, takes twenty minutes or so, record the attendees, job done. At two per year, you will catch everyone every couple of years easily.
If you have real alarms, use a debrief to give feedback and record these as refreshers too.

Posted By May Warley That's a good idea, to talk to fire marshals before a drill so that it could be carried out the correct way. Thanks a lot for the feedback and the suggestion. I was a little upset before I sent this post out as I wasn't sure if I was doing the right thing. May

Posted By Messy Shaw Sorry to be the first to say it, but it does depend on your risk assessment.
For instance, if you are a care home for elderly mentally ill in an old single staircase 4 storey building - your risk would be high
On the other hand, if you've a hedge fund office in the city with mobile employees who are awake & familiar with the building - the risk is so much lower.
Article 21 of the RR(FS)O 2005 say (paraphrasing) that the amount and frequency of training should be pro rata to the risk present. makes sense really. So the old persons home's wardens would need more frequent training than the office to reflect the degree of risk present
Therefore only you can determine the frequency based on the risks in the particular case in question

Another option would be to have a Fire Warden/Safety Group/Committee and hold training/awareness sessions, the FPA and other organisations provide loads of video/audio media.
I used this options previously on a quarterly basis, with minuted actions/feedback etc.
Its a useful way to demonstrate/promote Fire Safety in the workplace.
Good luck
