Posted By harry1964 I would like to put in place a management system to BS 18001, initially just to demonstrate the company has a H&S management system but in future to achieve certification. Rather than paying a consultant to put the system in place I would like to learn how the system works and to train to set up and audit the system.
With the above in mind could anyone recommend any training organisations in the North West?

Get yourself a copy of HSG 65. Very similar process for a fraction of the cost. HSE like it because it is there model, Insurance don't mind it providing you can demonstrate that you are using it and everything is kept up to date.

Posted By Rodger Alan Ker I would not disagree with Mr. Cartwright's comment that you should get (if you don't have it already) a copy of HSG 65.
However from my experience over ten years, my feeling was that the requirements within it and how to achieve them were rather "wishy washy".
I would suggest that the best route is to follow the ISO route, whereby all the main Management Systems, 9000, 14001 and 18001 follow a similar (not identical) format.
If your organisation is already registered for the Quality Standard, this will be a far more efficient route.

Posted By harry1964 I have had a look at HSG 65 but as you say found it a bit woolly, not very precise, I was hoping for something more structured and auditable.

I went on an 18001 Lead Auditor's course which then enabled me to do exactly what you are wanting to do. My thinking was that if I can audit it I should be able to do it and vv.
Also by going out and auditing others (if you go for IRCA) then you get to see what others are doing...best practice.

Posted By Andrew Kelleher Hi Harry
I sat a 18001 internal auditors course in Leeds recently. Like yourself, I wanted a greater insight into the implementation of 18001, and the course definitely provided this (also accredited by IRCA). If you want details of the provider please send me an email.

Posted By dopiaz Hi Harry,
IRCA Lead Auditor and internal auditor courses can increase your knowledge of the standard. There are also awareness courses that you can attend.
Certification Bodies publish white papers and booklets outlining the problems you face when starting out on the 18001 route (and how to deal with them).
e-mail me and I will send you details.
