Hi,
I've just been carrying out Risk Assessments on some of our Woodworking Machinery and have question regarding the Full Cutter / 4 way planer.
Our is fully enclose with an interlock guard and a 30 sec delay before the guard can be opened. However, the machine is not braked and takes most of those 30 seconds to stop completely.
The HSE woodworking Info sheet 40 seems to suggest that all such machines should be braked to 10 Secs by Dec 2008.
I have ordered the ACOP from the HSE but am awaiting delivery, in the meantime, can anyone tell me if this is in fact the case.

As long as the machines stops before the guard can be opened there is no need to fit braking. While you're wating for the ACOP you can download the Woodworking information sheet wis38 from the HSE web site at www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/wis38.pdf

Whilst I appreciate Peter's sensible comments and in the common sense world P would get my vote every time
However I am confident [off the top of the head without looking up the detail] that technically the machine should be braked irrespective of the guarding situation; which appears to be very good - There is/was a lead in period which you should check

Thanks for your complimentary comments. The HSE Woodworking Information Sheet WIS38 states clearly that if the risk assessment shows that there is no added safety benefit, then braking does not have to be provided.
You're right, there was a transition period for fitting braking, but it seems clear from the description that braking is not required in this case.
WIS38 does however point out that braking can increase productivity by achieving more rapid stopping for setting, adjustment etc.
The ACOP doesn't really add much but does have greater authority than the information sheet.

Thank you both for your comments. I have now downloaded WIS 38 as you suggested.
As you suggest the retro fitting of braking in this situation would not increase safety however, I take on board the comments about productivity too.
We are a bespoke joinery workshop and through-put is not really an issue.
I shall study the ACOP when it arrives.
