Posted By Mike Foulds Hi All Is there a standard model for scoring a Health and Safety audit. I have recently carried out an internal audit and the results are based on obvious risks, legal compliance, organisational behaviours....the list goes on, the standards have improved significantly over the last year with far less remedial actions and much better standards of overal site safety. I have been asked to score the audit numerically, is there a standard score method? My audit is based on my own knowledge of what should be right and observations so I do not follow a specific list. The audits prior to my apopointment were carried out by an extenal consultant who did score the eariler audits, there is not indication in the report what the scoring method was. Interestingly there appeared to be many omissions in the audit which I consider to be paramount to the information needed, fire hazardards included. I do not know whether a generic check list was used and scored but if this was the method, then the list was stuck to and if it was not listed it did not get included. Ideas appriciated. Mike

Posted By Stuff4blokes Hi Mike, the number, variety and methodologies of audits and scoring systems probably outnumber the total number of persons doing them! It is most important to be consistent between audits so that change can more easily be measured. Whatever numbering system you use it is a simple matter to convert the score to a percentage of the total available. However, the maximum score available should, in my opinion, be achievable and not set at "perfection" levels. Once 100% is achieved then perhaps the criteria and scoring system can be reviewed, with the co-operation and approval of those who are being audited.

Posted By Merv Newman Stuff is talking good sense. I have rarely found two identical scoring systems. Not even on two sites of the same company. However, I do get a sort of philosophical pain in the neck when discussing audits : the audited can only lose or break even. They can never win. ie points are deducted, or not, from a set maximum score. "you lost, or at least managed to get away with it this week" Which always breeds some resentment and fear of the auditors. (have you never seen people disappear out of the back door when you arrive ?) If an obvious effort has been made, problems solved, significant improvement achieved ... then I like to award bonus points. So an area which has a demerit or two this time can still score over 100% If they have TRIED. There is not a lot worse than seeing auditors come our of a perfect area grumbling because there was "nothing to report" Discuss Merv (when are traffic police going to give prizes to safe drivers ?)
