Hi
I've been looking at the DSE Regs, with a view to putting together a proposal for doing our DSE assessments, again. It’s been a year for some, longer for others, and to ensure we catch everyone I’d like to do them again. But this is not part of the regs by the look of it.
So if I think quickly about a risk assessment, I know people are not using the equipment correctly, and I’m not certain whose changed where they sit and who now works on two sites etc. (Probably reflecting the need for a more robust SMS.)
So I’m proposing we do everyone again.
I just wanted some re-assurance that I’ve not missed something in the regs that says you do this annually, or after as specific period has elapsed.

We normally conduct a RA first to all employees and new employees. We also provide information on a regular basis and have information readily available and equipment.
Then every year thereafter they fill in a simple self assessment form. Any issues highlighted in this form will indicate to us if further investigation is required another RA is wanted.
Do not think a full RA every year would be practicable and be of any real benefit to be honest. Imagine having 500 plus office based workers and how long a full RA would take on a yearly basis, when in most cases nothing new has occurred. Plus it is not the most exciting tasks to undertake (my opinion)

Hi Graham,
Very good point. However, if you relate the RA approach to re-assessment. Then it should be redone whenever there has been a significant change. This should include:-
Change of location (moving desks)
Change in equipment (new anything)
Therefore, most people change something often enough that they end up being reassessed at suitable frequencies. However, if not then I would suggest a reassessment very 2-3 years.
However, your comment that you know people are not using the equipment correctly is a bit worrying. It suggests that managers/supervisors are condoning unsafe working practices by not correcting it. I know lots of organisations have this issue, in that they undertake DSE assessments but people quickly revert back to 'normal'. Very few people actually challenge people about how the sit at DSE equipment.
All the best,
TonyB
