Posted By Coshh Assessor I don't think you'll find a definitive answer - they are supposed to do whatever they have been asked and trained to do. This will vary with the emergency procedures.

Posted By Pete Longworth You won't get a definitive answer I'm afraid because there isn't one. A fire marshall is supposed to do whatever you want them to do. I'm sorry if that sounds flippant but it all depends on your own arrangements for fire evacuation etc. If for instance, you have a role call system, then you may want the fire marshall to conduct the role call and pass the information on. If you have a sweep system, you may want the fire marshall to conduct the sweep and report the results. Some employers expect the fire marshall to conduct regular audits of fire arrangements eg ensuring exit routes are kept clear, extinguishers unobstructed etc. Others provide training in the use of extinguishers to fire marshalls.m There isn't a definitive role it is down to your own requirements.
