Posted By Kris Kelly Hi, I have noticed an increased number of cable / pipe damages at work, due to our operatives drilling through walls. I am being told by my operational department that Cable Dectector tools are not a practical solution to the problem!!!!! Has any body had experience with this before or used cable detectors on site??? Please advise... Thanks

Posted By Raymond Rapp Kris Cable avoidance detectors and service drawings are the main means of preventing contact with buried services. There particular types that are suitable for detecting pipes and electric cables in walls. Ray

Posted By b318isp So what do they propose as a "practical" solution? The risk of electrocution by a fixed cable installation or sudden release of pressure from a pipe would define the need for a for commonly used and simple detector.

Posted By Lee Mac Kris I have encountered protests in the past from ops regarding detectors not working properly. I tried it and found that it was working fine. Turned out the guys (Subcontractor) were not trained in the use of the tool. I trained them on the use of the specific avoidance tool and quizzed them a number of times after the training with no issues being raised. On other occasions I have found the instruments were not calibrated so giving inaccurate readings. Lee

Posted By Kris Kelly Thanks Lee This is my exact problem; the ops team say the tools don't work! I have ordered a unit myself to visit site and have a practice :) this way i will have evidence to support my recommendations. Thanks for your help.
