Warren,
Not aware of any specific scaffold requirements with regards to materials used.
Obvious area would be a detailed SSoW regarding risk assessment of hazards, risks of ignition etc, type of site and of course work with the site owners who will have lots of safe systems of work to adhere too if a top tier site?

I know a lot of scaffold used offshore is aluminium, although I'm not sure if this is just for weight savings?
Is it anything to do with steel on steel sparks?
Don't allow aluminium ladders to be used with steel scaffolds as aluminium on rusted steel can spark. Wooden ladders or fiberglass are better.
Maybe someone with offshore oil and gas experience would be able to help?

Warren,
Typically the Hazardous Area should be rendered non hazardous prior to carrying out work on the scaffold (Zones 0, 1, 2, 20, 21) as there would be a delay in any egress from the scaffold in the event of explosible substances. A lesser risk would exist for Zone 22 however, the possibility of ignition by thermite spark cannot be discounted.
