Posted By nim Any one can maintain portable fire extinguishers providing they are competent. Some how I don't think just going on a fire extinguisher service and maintenance course will make you a competent person. Definition of a competent person person with the necessary training and experience, with access to information, manuals and knowledge of any special procedures recommended extinguisher, to carry out the relevant maintenance procedures. Plus you will need the relevant parts to maintain all types of extinguishers otherwise you won’t be able to maintain the extinguishers. How many extinguishers do you expect to maintain? Wouldn’t it be cheaper just to employ someone who is competent?

Definition of a competent person person with the necessary training and experience, with access to the relevant tools, equipment and information, manuals and knowledge of any special procedures recommended by the manufacturer of the extinguisher, to carry out the relevant maintenance procedures. Wouldn’t it be cheaper just to employ someone who is competent?

Posted By FAH Hi SBH What the previous said! Plus, given that you identify that you do undertake client fire risk assessments, I presume that you have considered how & under what circumstances the recent case of the successful prosecution of the quarry owner & the consultancy that provided a consultant to undertake RAs will apply to you? Just 'cos it was "elf & syftee" doesn't remove the relevance!!! Frank Hallett

Posted By nim I get the impression that you have never serviced extinguishers before. It's going to be interesting watching you get the experience at someone else’s expense on someone else’s extinguishers. Also, conflict of interests. Which way round will you do it. Service the extinguishers then do the FRA Or FRA then service the extinguishers. When you give advice with regard to type and quantities of extinguishers, which hat will be giving the advice? The FRA could say you need more extinguishers and the engineer could then come along and supply them.
