Hello All,

I am currently trying to establish a safe system for the use of foam costumes. As part of this I am trying to find out how other organisations deal with hygiene issues – both prior to staff wearing the costumes on a daily basis and also from a deep clean of the costume.

At the moment guidance from manufacturers seems to point towards a simple clean with soapy water, rather than any anti-bacterial material. I am not convinced that this would be suitable as there could be a large number of staff who would be sharing the costumes.

Can anyone help please?

But do you also expect to wash your staff in disinfectant, or do you just hope that they use soap and water on a regular basis?

Kieth, I'm really intrigued!

Given your unfortunately "open" email link - just how are these foam costumes to be used?

Have you tried talking to a reputable clothing hire shop?

Frank,

Thanks. Yes indeed, they are used within the Met! The costumes consist of a foam head & shoes which resemble a police uniform. The rest of the outfit is trousers & top made of a cloth material.

They are used by safer neighbourhood teams at community events in an effort to engage more with the public.

I have spoken with some people in the leisure industry – but my main issue – around hygiene of the head element – still causes some concern. Currently the head part if cleaned after use with soap & water and then a commercial spray (Fabreze) is used to mask any odours. I have concerns over that process – and hence the post to see what anyone else did!

If there are odour problems after washing with soap and water, then you are not using soap and water well enough, or not drying the problem adequately
