You dont HAVE to put any signage anywhere.

What makes you think you do?

Is this a workplace? or public area? Either way do you have a duty of care? probably.

"You should always check with your insurers and ascertain any requirements that they may insist upon under the terms of your cover" - Advice from www.nationalwatersafety.org.uk

If it is a workplace I may be prudent if access is via designated walkways to have signage at the entrances to the locations?

The request was for information on how far apart should they be, not opinions on whether they might be needed - I assume someone who knows the site is able to assess whether they are needed.

BS 5499: 2006 Part 10 is a code of practice for signs and may be useful, but doesn't give anything so simple as a recommended distance between them, instead it expands on the general idea that someone going in the direction of the hazard should be able to see a sign about it before they get there. It will depend on the layout, and on the size of the signs, so I think it's reasonable just to walk around thoughtfully and come to a decision that way.

No specific legislation etc to cover this. On one 150 acre lake I have distributed signs at a distance I consider suitable and sufficient.

Don't forget once you have established the requirenment, there will be a further requirement for inspection - to make certain they are still in place. Use pictoral as well for obvious reasons.

Rescue rings? Are you intending to include?

Hi Susan

There is guidance on the VSCG website, supplemented by e.g. the inland water safety guide publshed by RoSPA. More is coming out in the near/medium term 9you may see a picture of my border collie!).

However, looking at you email address, doubt that much of this guidance will be of specific help, though the suggsions of primary warnings with smaller intermittent signage would appear appropriate to most of your sites - defining the dstances would rquire site specific inspection.

Regard, Peter
