Posted By robert9 The term "habitually uses DSE" is used in the DSE Regulations. Can someone expand on this (e.g. hours of DSE use per shift) for when someone requires a DSE risk assessment to be carried out? Thanks

Posted By robert9 Thanks for the responses. To clarify; would someone who used DSE continuously for one hour per shift be a "habitual user" and someone who used DSE for 10 mins 6 time throughout the day would not be?

Posted By Swis A user is a person who uses DSE on continuous or near-continuous spells of an hour or more at a time and have to transfer information quickly to or from the DSE; Person who apply high levels of attention and concentration and/or are highly dependent on display screen and have little choice about using it and/or need special training or skills to use that display screen is also classified as a user. Hope that helps

Posted By Paul Leadbetter Robert As Swis says, it depends on what the person is doing for that total of an hour a day; the guidelines stated above are just that and should be adjusted to take account of other factors, such as the degree of concentration required, the amount of pressure the person is under, etc. Paul

Posted By SNS Our interpretation is that if they must use a screen to carry out the job they are de-facto DSE users. Rgds, S

Posted By robert9 Thanks for the responses. Using the information you have given, I'll put together a definition for our DSE users. Thanks Robert

Posted By Ron Hunter The Law (Regulation 1(2)(d) defines as follows: "user" means an employee who habitually uses display screen equipment as a significant part of his normal work.

Posted By naveen duggal Hi, I do agree with Ron and other's comment. However, a regular DSE user may be defined as a person using DSE,computers, ...etc with proper care, body posture, exposure time and good ergonomic conditions. i.e. He /she is aware of the constant use of DSE and takes small breaks, or changes his work routines to avoid eye-strain & back spine problems. rgds Naveen

Posted By Swis Naveen, Unfortunately, I do not agree with you. A person who DOESNOT use computer with proper care, uses with a BAD posture in WORST ergonomic conditions and who DOESNOT take regular breaks, WITHOUT paying any considerations to ULDS is STILL classified a ‘user’. These issues should be addressed adequately but being a ‘user’ is not dependant on any secondary conditions. Swis
