Do brand new extinguishers require a record of inspection as soon as they are pulled from the box, my thoughts are they would, however would be grateful of some clarrification.

I know about yearly inspections, maintenance and visual checks, just need to know about initial. Chapter and verse would be nice.

Many thanks

Know you posted this a month ago but to answer your question.

Draft BS5306 Part 3:2009 which if and when it is released has a clause which specifies a Commissioning service for new extinguishers.

This requires new extinguishers to be commissioned and installed to BS 5306 Part 3:2009 and Part 8:2000 by a competent person.

The reason for this is to eliminate unqualified incompetent people from supplying and or installing fire extinguishers.

Fire extinguishers are very reliable but only if they weren't faulty in the first place.

There is also a clause in the RRFSO which mentions the need for competent persons to maintain fire fighting equipment.

If it doesn't work then it isn't a fire extinguisher.

If the person who commissions or installs is not competent then they can't tell you if it works or not.

If there is no label on the extinguisher completed by a competent person then there is no proof that that extinguisher was installed by a competent person.

A certificate or invoice without a commissioning label on the extinguisher is not proof that that extinguisher was correctly commissioned.

I assume, like us, all your properties have a fire register to record daily, weekly etc, checks.. we as a matter of course have local staff check fire extinguishers on a weekly basis and record ..they are ok or any fault, damage etc. hardly an onerous task.

We buy all of our equipment from one of our group companies. However we always get them tested purely as you never know how long they have been sitting at the manufacturers and / or our group companies warehouse. Then we can ensure that they are in working condition etc... and if not can get them replaced.
