Does anyone have a company policy on listeing to personal music devices while working on construction sites? It has become a major safety concern for us and wondered what others did.
Thanks
Heather in Canada :)

Not directly in construction but mixed engineering and manufacturing. We do not allow the use of Ipod or equivalents, or personal mobile phones on site during working hours, what the guys do during breaks and lunch is up to them (within all other safety considerations etc.)

definitely not!
They provide a distraction, and mean that people may not hear fire alarms or audible warnings shouted by colleagues.
Make it clear in everyones induction that they must not be used and why, then back it up with disciplinary measures where necessary.

copyright is also a problem if those next to a worker can also hear the music
If a worlker has both ears covered they will not be able to respond to others around them properly

Bob,
I gather the copyright remark was tongue in cheek.
I do not work on a construction site, but we as a company do not allow any personal stereos etc. this includes phones.
