Posted By DPK Has anyone experience/knowledge of the PRINCE2 project management course, if you do was it beneficial to your work as a H&S advisor/Manager and if it was in which way. I am thinking of taking the qual to have a better understanding of the world of managers, additionally i currently go into predominantly SME's and set up H&S systems and advise as many of you do on H&S. I have looked into course providers but would like some independent advise. All relevant advise is welcome. DPK

Posted By sam 13 I have completed the P2 foundation course and have found it very helpful when implementing H&S management systems/improvement programs managed by myself, I would say the effectiveness of using the P2 methodology to implement management systems where you may not act the project manager or the manager does not have experience in P2 would be doubtful as the methodology follows some strict rules. That said a good understanding of any project management disciplines/techniques/methods that will allow you to tailor your implementation programs to suit the organisation is surly a good thing. I would certainly recommend taking P2 foundation if only to understand project management better and the common areas of project failure. I also think it’s important to understand that P2 methodology can be used on any size of project and scaled to suit, in my experience (and I’ve only been using the methodology for 6 months) when applied correctly it’s been very effective but my projects generally consist of 10 people, if you where to apply the methodology to a large scale project you may need to apply some more complicated techniques to manage within the prince 2 framework which the course does not teach, id say in this situation there is no substitution for experience. In summery why not go ahead and attend the P2 course it will provide a good starting point and insight to project management and I’m sure add value to you day to day job , but don’t expect to have the skills of a professional project manager (I still regularly have to ask for advice) but you will be able to speak the language.

Posted By Bob Youel Its OK for basic areas of project management and all qualifications are good qualifications My advice is that if you are undertaking more advanced work e.g. CDM areas use a more advanced system

Posted By Piper I have found the Prince 2 foundation and Practitioners awards extremely helpful in the design, delivery and implementation of health and safety management systems. As the name describes the foundation award does provide a good base but it is important to go on to complete the practitioners exam. The PrINCE2 methodology is very useful, however the experience of having undertaken project management can not be replaced.
