Posted By srd On starting in a new position I have just realised that we are not recording road traffic accidents in the accident book. My first reaction on finding out was that we should be recording them in the accident book, but as I understand it there is no need to RIDDOR report them, so now I'm not so sure. Advice please. Steve.

Posted By jde If the RTA occurs as a result of the person going about his work / business, then the accident should be recorded and if meeting the RIDDOR criteria, reported accordingly.

Posted By Bob Y Yes they should be recorded in the accident book if they happen during work time. There are a few 'road incidents' that do have to be reported under RIDDOR - see reg 10

Posted By Swis You should keep a log of accidents and injuries in your record book to pinpoint and common trends/training needs and for the purpose of any possible future claims. However, you must be cautious of reporting road accidents under RIDDOR as only a limited number of vehicle accidents on roads are reportable. Only reportable if; 1) exposure to any substancet being transported; (b) accidents arising from vehicle loading and unloading activities; (c) accidents arising in connection with road works etc

Posted By srd I should clarify that we are recording the accidents, but not in the accident book. I've searched the HSE and Google sites and cannot find anything that says that road traffic acts should be recorded in the accident book. Can anyone point me to anything official that I can use to convince our transport manager? Steve.

Posted By Bob Youel because it is an accident it requires recording. Where the accident happened e.g. on the highway,in a shop etc does not matter Read social security law to get your reasons behind my comments as that set of laws have a specific reporting parameter irrespective of RTA's etc and an accident book is a requirement of SS law not H&S law

Posted By Ron Hunter If you have a Transport Manager, I surmise you have a fleet of some sort? What Transport Manager wouldn't want to know the circumstances causing accidental damage to works vehicles, be in a position to collate facts and figures, and formulate (working with others like yourself) possible preventative strategies to save your Organisation a lot of money?
