Hi I wonder if anyone here can help or offer some guidance on the above topic.
My company deal with accident damaged vehicles, very similar to vehicle recovery, and given this, we sometimes have to collect motorbikes, from a wide range of places (i.e. back gardens / ditches / very narrow lanes etc).
Now obviously in a perfect world we would use a mechanical means to move these bikes, and get them onto the trucks to bring back to our yards. However this is not always as easy as you'd think.
Now we've had a few minor issues where people have hurt their backs moving these bikes, and to be honest we're at a bit of obstacle now that I can't find any guidance or anyone who can offer Manual Handling training when trying to move motorcycles. I'm not even sure if there is any?
If anyone can provide any guidance or can share some similar experiences I would be extremely greatful!
Kind Regards
James.

Use a winch, a trailer/winch combo, an industrial power-mover, and consider double-teaming in awkward situations.

" can't find any guidance or anyone who can offer Manual Handling training when trying to move motorcycles"
Hi
Most manual handling courses will be about the principles of manual handling and manual handling risk assessment, these should then be applied to specific situations. (I went on a very good train the trainer course run by ROSPA)
There are several historic threads discussing manual handling risk assessment - worth a search. (try searching for MAC)
http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/manlinde.htm
http://www.hse.gov.uk/msd/index.htm
The above will provide guidance on the need to avoid manual handling and where necessary risk assess lifts.

Obviously we've had the generic manual handling training, i.e. principles etc and how to do a risk assessment (i.e. TILE / MAC) and we have the winch for getting the cars on deck. However a winch is not always suitable for a motorbike, as i'm sure you can imagine this will likely cause the bike to sustain further damage...
It doesn't seem that there is any particular MH guidance for this particular type of activity...

Would you be able to utilise a small lorry mounted crane? a fairly long Jib could be used due to the relatively light weight of a motorcycle 100 - 200kg. Although your current vehicles are probably small car transporters, could you lease a version with a small crane?
