I am new to health and safety work and have been asked to carry out a risk assessment on a corporate barbeque event to be held on the work site. I know that I have to list the hazards, and who is at risk. I am finding it difficult to estimate likelihoods and impacts of risks - how do you estimate the liklihood of a barbeque fuel gas bottle exploding for instance?, or the liklihood of contaminated food poisoning? It seems that these measurements are subjective depending on how optimistic / pessimistic you happen to be. Also, how do I know that I have thought of all the hazards - within reason, are there standard lists of hazards attached to various activities? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not being an expert on bar-b-Qs...I can only advise on general considerations and the risk assessment process.
The idea of risk assessment is to list down the main hazards associated with the task and then estimate the likelihood of that occurring, the severity if it did and finally based on your assessment, identify the main hazards. Then you look at how to reduce those risks to as low as reasonably practicable. Simple!

Many things here to consider.
Condition of gas BBQ equipment.
Suitable location and ground conditions.
First Aid.
Means of escape.
Emergency lighting if during hours of darkness.
Procedure for summoning emergency services.
Food safety/hygiene.
Issues with provision of alcohol.
Car parking attendants.
Sure there are a few more.

There's a clue for you there. You've been asked to assess an event that is going ahead anyway!
A simple google search on barbecue safety should provide you with all you need on fire, food and people safety - probably from the top 3 results.

Hi,
Agree with tdunbar's answer - but ultimately I also agree with the previous post (about getting someone else/others) to help you.
I would add fire safety to the list of issues to think about - how is going to be started (not with lighter fluid or petrol I hope!), where is it going to be lit, etc. Manual handling if using LPG cylinders.
It doesn't need to be complex, although it may seem so from above. Drop me a line direct if you want.
