A component of a machine has 2 sub-components with probabilities of failure as 0.2 and 0.3 respectively. The component will fail if either one of the sub-component fail.

How do we calculate the probability of component failure in this case?

0.2x0.3+0.2X0.7+0.8x0.3=0.44

or

1-0.7X0.8=0.44

Thank you, Ming. Can you please respond with the formulae also? What if there are more than 2 sub-components.
