One of the companies I look after were carrying out operations using a cage (manbasket)last Friday to fit a new racking system. On my safety tour, I noticed that the operator was not harnessed in nor wearing a hard hat, and asked for proceedings to cease immediately.

The operator did not know where the harness was, and his manager was on holiday.

His manager has contacted me this morning, saying that they could use the their Crown WAV 50 Manrisers to do the same job, and that they don't require harnesses for this.

I am not back there until Friday and would like to be pre-armed before making any decision, but personally, I dont like the idea of putting up racking using the manrises and not being harnessed in.

Is using the manriser without a harness possible?

Kind regards
David

Hi David,

The only use I have used the crown wave machines are for hand picking light weight objects only.

They are restricted wieght limits.. about 90 kg i think!

Areas of concern:
Is this the right equipment for the task ... leaning out ect as there is unlikely a anchor point for harness etc or stability for such?

Is the weight limitations sufficient?

When i used these there was a 1/2 day training session provided as they have a 'knack' to steer and manoeuvre!

IF.. a risk assessment has been carried out... these points should have been addressed?

No specific knowledge of the kit referred to, but harness and hard hat are by no means mandatory for MEWP operations.
Harness only required where risk of collision exists, except when working over water, where life jacket should be substituted for harness.

Hi David,

Not familiar with the MEWP that you have mentioned (assuming it's a MEWP), you could try the IPAF website

http://www.ipaf.org/

I've found them to be helpful in past.

Thanks for the help here. I will review with their Safety Manager on Friday! He has apparently done a risk assessment, but can't get hold of it till he is back from his holidays.

Yes, risk of collision, so safety helmets and harnesses required Ron, but never thought of a life jacket when working over water - nice one.

I do believe there is a limit as to the weight these manrisers can sustain, and I am really concerned with the reaching out element of the operator, and the possibility of lone working here! Much prefer the FLT and cage operation.

Once again, thanks for the advice, I will risk assess the whole operation.

Kind regards
David

The crown wave series is not a MEWP (in the true sense) but is a picking truck, i doubt (but may be wrong) if it has harness anchor points which IMHO you will still need as the operator will need to lean out of the machine to erect racking.
Weight limits and stability at height would be a concern.

the link below will take you to crown's site (brochure)which might help in making up your own mind about suitability

Thanks for that Andy. It still doesn't convince me either that it is safe for racking installation! I have contacted their rep to clarify the 'other' safe options with the WAV 50, other than picking orders etc.
