Posted By Lee Mac Hi All We encountered a bit of a design problem on one of our projects where the design of an alleyway created a problem with scaffolding i.e. it only permitted a 2 board platform to be built due to how narrow the alleyway is. The alleyways in question are 6 metres in length. Bearing in mind the rule that 2 boards to remain free as a walkway. This was not highlighted in the CDM-C's Pre Construction Information, which we based our CPP upon. We did a risk assessment and one control identified to ensure that the 2 boards remain free was to have a minimal amount of brickies materials (bricks & mortar)stored only at one side of the platform leaving the other free at all times. As you can imagine this will result in a bit of a long winded excersise to build a gable wall but it will be in keeping with best practice. Any thoughts where we should go from here regarding construction? Also would this cause us to receive a PN/IN should the HSE pay us a wee visit? Thanks Lee

Posted By Luke. Lee, The work at height regualations only dictate that the working platforms and decking should be of an adeqaute width to carry out the works. The following is only a guide: Min width for men and materials provided that 440mm left clear for passage of men or 640mm if barrows are used then min width of 4 boards. However, You have 2 boards and need to remember tha when material is deposted on a platform, a clear passage of 440mm MUST BE maintained. In my experience, getting brick layers to keep an area free from clutter is an immpossible task and telling brick layers that they have to keep walking around a scaffold to collect materials and walk them back is also going to cause you lots of stress!! Why wasn't this picked up before before?

Posted By Lee Mac My thoughts are that the design is at fault here and to be honest the alleyways could have been a bit larger as the greens are massive. We have the brickies currently following our rules to the letter at the moment- I guess the lack of work means they know they can't walk out on one site and step into another these days. Lee

Posted By Luke. Indeed.. but lucky for you its not reasonably practicable to re-build the houses to accommodate the scaffold ;)
