I have just responded to another thread but in doing so I realised that the current climate is having a massive impact on the price being charged for safety services. I am getting called on a daily basis from companies who can offer me everything from noise testing to training to advisor services and the prices they are charging is making my hair curl - in a bad way.
I realise so many - as you can see from the careers forum - are in the devastating position of losing their job - and I guess many people are doing anything they can to get off the starting blocks -who can blame them - but I have been quoted £120 per day for advisor services. Maybe the current climate is finally putting daily rates where they should be - or are we in danger of underselling ourselves? It is supply and demand and what you are prepared to pay - as how else will some of the 'big boys' continue to survive. I certainly am more prepared to haggle!!!!

£120 a day sounds a bit cheap. Compare that to what you would pay a chippie or sparkie for a days work. But, as you say, people are needing to find work. The problem will come when the recession ends and they want to put up their price. Perhaps an introductory offer that leads to a better day rate would be a better foot in.

£120 per day is ridiculously cheap when the costs of administering a business are taken into account. Perhaps this is on the "black economy" where tax, insurance, competence etc is non-existent.
To earn £24,000 pa this equates to 200 paid working days per year.
For anyone tempted to buy such a low-price service, please think about what will be delivered and whether it suits your needs.

But ours is generally a field not valued - until the worst happens.
Medium size firms are slashing safety posts left right and centre.
I'm a gen. cert man with years of experience, always been against the demand for dip. status as a must, but given the attitudes to our role and the *&%$ wages being offered now I feel it may be the only way to go.
Just need the trainers to sort the prices out so those of us on normal salary's with kids and a home to support can afford it !

It has become obvious during the last few months that both employers [our clients] and also Agencies [those who act as intermediaries - sic] are driving down the fees paid to contacters.
I recently had a conversation [rather short as it happens] that focussed almost entirely on equivalent daily costs to an employed position; barely mentioned competence to achieve the job objectives; never specifically addressed timescale [which equals workload & therefore cost]; and when I asked what level of Professional Indemnity Insurance might be required I was told that this was my problem.
The conversation was with an intermediary who had a specific client with a specific activity!
